IT HAS BEEN QUITE OFTEN THAT CURIOSITY HAS KILLED THE CAT, BUT IN THIS CASE CURIOSITY HAS MADE A FASHION SENSATION. MOCHI SAW ITS BEGINNINGS IN THE MIND OF A YOUNG AYAH TABARI WHO WONDERED HOW HER MOTHER’S WARDROBE CAME TO BE. THE MOST PROMINENT FEATURE OF MOCHI MIGHT AS WELL BE ITS INSIGHT INTO A VARIETY OF CULTURES, WHICH TABARI DEVELOPED THROUGH HER DIVERSE BACKGROUND- BORN IN THE MIDDLE EAST, EDUCATED IN LONDON, TRAVELLED ACROSS THE GLOBE.
In conversation with Aashka Iyer.
Quirky yet sophisticated- the perfect words to portray Tabari’s style are also the perfect words to portray Mochi. Deriving inspiration from the craftsmanship of various communities, the fashion house aims to help these artisans sustain their lives while exposing their talents to an audience. “To be honest the communities, seeing how supporting them has increased their monetary benefits and way of living – is really quite something! In terms of customers, the demand for the product has been so amazingly high that I just want to keep on pleasing!”
Her most recent collection is Mini Mochi, which portrays a range of clothing for kids. “Customers have been asking me for at least a year and a half, so it was about time and it is sooo cute especially when Mummys and daughters are matching in the mini sets!” The label’s 6th collection launched this September. There are also a few collaborations with other brands in store for the future.
“Two things, ignore critism, there will be haters and you get out what you put in – fashion is a labor intensive, tough industry but if you work hard, you will get to where you want to be!”
