Two days’ workshop with the legend himself

Grace, sophistication and expression, creating a magic with these is a mark of true dancer, Sargam Music Group in association with Heart and Soul events present the Kathak legend Padma Vibhushan Pandit Birju Maharaj.

The maestro who brings his soul onto stage will mesmerize you with his performance on Friday, December 2, 2016 at the Emirates International School Auditorium.

Pandit Birju Maharaj who has also won Best Choreographer award for Bollywood songs like ‘Mohe Rang Do Laal’ from ‘Bajirao Mastani’ and ‘Kaahe Chhed Mohe’ from ‘Devdas’ will be accompanied by his foremost disciple Dr Saswati Sen.

Dr Saswati Sen stands tall in the way she has embellished Kathak by integrating the sacredness of a tradition and blending it with a contemporary approach.

Making her comeback in Kathak is none other than the founder of Sargam, Smt Somdatta Basu, she says, “I met with a severe accident which compelled me to take a break. It is only because of my Guru’s blessing and encouragement I will be dancing as well as singing in the event.”

The evening will also showcase the talented Sargam musical group which will pay a tribute to the legend Padma Vibhushan Pandit Birju Maharaj who is also a singer par excellence and is known for writing modern poetry as well as songs, dance compositions and thumris.

Sargamites will present songs written and composed by the guru himself – an evening you would not want to miss.

That’s not all Pandit Birju Maharaj will also be conducting a two day workshop to formally inaugurate Sargam’s journey into the world of Kathak on December 1 and 3, 2016.

Somdatta Basu says, “Sargam is just a first step towards my goal to offer a platform for music aficionados, to create a space in which each participant can grow and thrive with a knowledge of all the different art forms.”

In order to get maximum knowledge from the master himself, for the first time in Dubai, the workshops have been split into 3 groups:

· Juniors: Those who wish to begin learning the Indian Classical dance form or have recently started learning it

· Madhayama: Those who have been learning for 2-3 years

· Seniors: This is particularly for teachers, performers and those who have been learning for over 5 years

Each of these categories will have workshops on both days. It doesn’t just end here, each participant gets a certificate signed by Padma Vibhushan Pandit Birju Maharaj, himself.

Somdatta Basu believes a true artist should have knowledge of all forms of music as they are interdependent and compliment each other. She says, “Since childhood my parents have encouraged me to pursue both Hindustani vocal and dance.”

She adds, “I have idolized my Guru Pandit Birju Maharaj ji who being a famous dancer is a singer, composer, writer, painter and is able to play different instruments like tabla, sarangi and the flute. Fortunately, Sri Santosh Maharaj, my first teacher is a dancer, singer, composer and a tabla player. So, as a guru shisya parampara (master-student tradition) I would like to continue and pass on the same knowledge to my students.”
